SPED Teacher is the worst position in education

: If you are thinking about becoming a SPED teacher, don’t. It’s awful. Every district is dysfunctional. Every year is bad. Good teachers are let go, bad teachers come back. The kids are 6 grade levels behind, BUT YOU HAVE TO TEACH GRADE LEVEL CURRICULUM. So the kids learn nothing. You will be asked to lie on IEPs. You have multiple bosses. If you push into Gen Ed classes, good chance the Gen Ed teachers will complain about you. The IEP goals are so advanced it’s impossible for the kids to make progress and yet you are blamed for not teaching effectively. Literally any other job at a school is better.

A special education teacher on Reddit/speciated says that the students at her school (public or private, doesn’t matter, same federal law) are behind but they must teach at grade level.

  • The kids are 6 grade levels behind, BUT YOU HAVE TO TEACH GRADE LEVEL CURRICULUM. So the kids learn nothing.

The stated goal in the law is that the disability is removed, which is itself impossible, especially for the disabilities named in the Individuals with Disabilities Education  Act.

  • You will be asked to lie on IEPs.

IEP is a legal document where this is forbidden.

  • The IEP goals are so advanced it’s impossible for the kids to make progress and yet you are blamed for not teaching effectively. Literally any other job at a school is better.

So, the goals and the plans are designed for the student to fail, long-term. Unlike the students, the teachers have a way out. This is a problem for the teacher as long as they stay in the system. They can resign, students can’t.
