Were autistics included in the story?
What’s the story?
Hope Network in Grand Rapids, Michigan, whose Center for Autism is based on Applied Behavioral Analysis, is hosting Autisn Acceptance Month events as fundraisers.
1. Hockey game.
2. Bridge Walk.
3. Museum sensitivity evening hours.
What needs to change?
1. Hockey games are not sensory sensitive by the nature of the game. This is inappropriate.
2. Bridge walk is inappropriate because of its nature.
3. Limiting autistics to a museum is inappropriate. A museum can be modified, so it should be modified at all times. If it can be modified for several hours, it can be modified at all hours. According to the website, there are 4 sensory Sundays during 2024: March, April, July, and December. This gives the message that autistics are welcome 4 days during regular hours each year, and an ABA center’s fundraiser 1 evening per year.
